Fitting a Damascus Steel Ferrule to a Hickory Dowel Shaft
Fitting our Damascus Steel Ferrule to a Hickory Shaft for a Gentleman's Cane
Picture 01:
Using a tubing cutter make a groove 1/2" in from end of shaft. Deepen as necessary with a razor saw. Tap down from the end with a chisel to make a peg for the ferrule fitting as you go

Picture 02:
Wash the ferrule with alcohol to remove any oil and glue on with epoxy. (I use JB Weld)

Picture 03:
Carve and sand the shaft to taper to fit the ferrule to the end. I sand to 600 grit this removes the pattern from the ferrule (it is still in the steel just no longer shows)

Picture 04:
Etch the ferrule with ferric chloride mixed 50/50 with water

Picture 05:
To provide more contrast treat the surface with Birchwood Casey Super Blue then lightly sand with 1000 grit paper. Finish with Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil to protect from rusting at the same time you finish the shaft
